Changhua Community College and the International Buddha’s Light Association Changhua Teachers’ Chapter held a campus lecture on May 14 at Dongxing Elementary School in Lukang Township, Changhua County.
The talk, titled “Live the Three Acts of Goodness, Create a Happy Life,” was given by Venerable Lecturer Chen Hsuan-Yu, a lecturer from the International Buddha’s Light Association and the Ministry of Education’s Life Education Program. The session incorporated videos and real-life stories and engaged 140 students and teachers from grades 1 to 5 in a discussion on how practicing the Three Acts of Goodness can lead to a happy life.
Principal Lin Ya-Hui expressed her gratitude to the Buddha’s Light Association and Changhua Community College for holding the lecture at the school for the third time. She mentioned that the International Buddha’s Light Association’s campus life education program includes ten themes, and she hopes that all ten lectures can be held at the school so that students can gain knowledge and grow through each one. A certificate of appreciation was then presented to Chen Hsuan-Yu and Lu Yi-Ping, President of the Changhua Teachers’ Chapter.
Chen Hsuan-Yu emphasized that “the most beautiful practice in the human world is the Three Acts of Goodness: doing good deeds, speaking good words, and thinking good thoughts.” He explained that good character radiates a noble temperament and earns respect. Citing the example of American steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, he encouraged students to practice the Three Acts of Goodness daily and to spread positive energy. Through video and discussion, he helped students see that small acts of kindness can accumulate into a “happiness savings account,” building trust between people. Doing good, he noted, is proof that serving others brings joy, and helping others allows one to experience empathy and compassion.
“Speaking good words is like sunlight in winter,” said Chen, reminding everyone to speak kindly in daily life. He compared kind words to perfume: when you spray it on others, your own hands are scented too. Speaking kindly helps build positive relationships with classmates and encourages recognizing others’ strengths and giving praise. He quoted the saying, “A kind word warms in winter; a harsh word chills in June,” explaining that changing our words can change the world.
He went on to say, “Thinking good thoughts brings sincerity, good relationships, and good fortune.” He shared the story “The Young Monk Saves the Ants” to show students the importance of caring for small animals and cultivating kindness from a young age—cherishing life, loving others as oneself, showing respect, being honest, and following rules. A person’s thoughts influence their actions, which shape habits, habits form character, and character determines destiny.
In conclusion, Chen Hsuan-Yu reminded everyone that by living out the Three Acts of Goodness—doing good, speaking kindly, and thinking positively—one can form good habits and a strong character, ultimately creating a happy life. He called on teachers and students to use their hands to do good deeds, their smiles to speak kind words, and to practice kindness in their hearts every day. When we all live out the Three Acts of Goodness, happiness and joy will naturally follow.
